Increasing Gender Balance in Edited Volumes

April 11, 2011 § Leave a comment

My first edited collection right out of grad school was, unfortuately, very imbalanced in terms of its authors. Of the 40 or so chapters, only 3 were by women. After exposure to the Feminists Philosophers blog and its various discussions of the importance of balance, I’ve worked very hard to make the new collection I’m working significantly better in this regard. Of the 24 papers in this volume, a third will be written by women (and this despite having female potential contributors turn down invitations at almost twice the rate as males).
