What I am doing is being aware. The simple fact of being aware of the place of women in philosophy can have an enormous impact on how we go about doing things.
In particular, I am currently in the process of putting together a volume on early modern philosophy. Being aware made me realize my first list of contributors was way too androcentric, and I have thus made an effort to include as even a mix of men and women as possible. And, in the process, I have discovered the work of some women philosophers that is just fantastic, exceptionally good. And it is work I would never know about if wasn’t aware of the status of women in the field.
This won’t end sexism in philosophy, but simple vigilance and awareness can go a long way if we commit ourselves to using that awareness for the betterment of women in philosophy. Such efforts can only help the discipline, and thus the goal of helping eliminate bias in philosophy and that of becoming better philosophers go hand in hand.
