Asking about women on the conference line-up

June 3, 2011 § 6 Comments

I am a male philosopher at a top 5 Leiter institution, who is invited to speak at many conferences. If I have any concern that the conference might be all-male, I now always ask something like: “May I ask who else will speak? I trust this will not be an exclusively male line-up?”

The strategy is to draw explicit attention to gender inclusiveness in a way that appeals to the good intentions of the organizers, and at a time before their speaker list is finalized.

This strategy has been quite successful: I believe that it has led to the inclusion of women speakers at two conferences so far.
